Humble Pie

Last week I was served a large portion of humble pie. Have you ever tried it? It’s not a very tasty dessert. When someone points out a failure, and you have to admit the person is right, it can leave a very bad coating on the tongue. And it doesn’t usually come with ice cream.

There are all kinds of ways we can find ourselves in need of that embarrassing dessert, but the main one is. . .

PRIDE – It goeth before a fall, according to Proverbs, the King James Version. We set ourselves up on a pedestal – or someone else puts us there – and we start to believe it. That’s not to say we shouldn’t celebrate our successes. And we should definitely celebrate others when they reach a milestone or goal they have been working toward. But thinking I’m the GOAT? I might as well call myself Humpty Dumpty. And you know what happened to him.

The disciples once asked Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (Matthew 18, NIV) Jesus responded by saying they need to take the lowest position – that of a child – in order to be the greatest. Ouch. Talk about humble pie. But then again, is a child really the lowest? How many of us have actually learned things from our grandchildren? Yeah, they really are the greatest.

So for all of you – I want to encourage you to keep on trying. Whatever it is you are trying to achieve, don’t give up. If you make a mistake along the way, eat the dessert. You may not like the taste, but you can always follow it with a spoon full of sugar.

And my plea to you? Keep me humble. Show me when I’m wrong. Help me to be and do better. You are my friends, and I appreciate all of you.

Be Blessed,

Rena
